Information for Akron, Ohio

Ohio, seat (1842) of Summit county, northeastern Ohio, U.S. It lies along the Cuyahoga River, about 40 miles (64 km) south-southeast of Cleveland. Akron is the centre of a metropolitan area that includes the cities of Cuyahoga Falls, Tallmadge, and Stow and several villages. At 1, 081 feet (329 metres) above sea level, it was named for its 'high place' (Greek: akros ) on the watershed between the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes. Laid out in 1825 by Gen. Simon Perkins, commissioner of the Ohio Canal Fund, the town was assured substantial growth by the completion of the Ohio and Erie Canal in 1827 and of the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal in 1840, linking it with Pittsburgh. Waterpower and transportation supplied by these canals led to Akron's early development as an industrial centre. The abundant water supply and the arrival of the railroads prompted Benjamin F. Goodrich to move a small rubber factory to the site in 1871. This industry rapidly expanded with the advent of the automobile and the demand for rubber tires. Between 1910 and 1920 the city's population tripled to more than 200, 000, and Akron became known as the 'rubber capital of the world' and the international or American headquarters of the far-flung giants of the rubber industry - Firestone, General Tire, Goodrich, and Goodyear; by the late 20th century, however, only Goodyear remained. The city's manufactures are now well diversified and, apart from a wide variety of polymer and plastic products, include farm machinery, automotive parts, toys, power-generating equipment, and chemicals. The city has largely shifted away from a manufacturing economy, however, while the service and trade sectors have grown. In the late 20th century some manufacturing plants and downtown stores were closed, but by the late 1990s several large-scale projects had succeeded in stimulating a revitalization of the downtown area.Goodyear Polymer Center, University of Akron, Ohio. Rick Dikeman The hangar at the city's airport is the site of the Goodyear Wingfoot Lake Airship Base (for airships [blimps]). This hangar is one of the world's largest buildings without interior supports. Akron is an important truck terminal and distribution point between the eastern seaboard and the Midwest.More than 6, 000 acres (2, 400 hectares) in the city are occupied by parks, and surrounding lakes and reservoirs and several golf courses afford recreation facilities; the southern limit of Cuyahoga Valley National Park is just north of the city. The World Series of Golf, played in Akron, is an annual professional tournament. Nearby Derby Downs is the site of the annual All-American Soap Box Derby for homemade gravity-powered cars. The city's cultural centres include the Akron Art Museum and the Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens (with antiques dating from the 14th century). The construction of a new convention centre (1994), the National Inventors Hall of Fame (1995), and a new stadium for the minor-league baseball Aeros all contributed to a downtown renaissance in the late 1990s. Akron - Why DIY Garage Door Replacement is a Bad Idea Articles

5 Helpful Tips When Hiring a Garage Door Repair Company

When it comes to something as serious as your homes garage door, you dont want to risk hiring the wrong repair company. The results can be costly and dangerous to your family. Unfortunately, there are a lot of repair companies that arent qualified to handle the job. With that being said, its critically important that you know what to look for when hiring a company.

5 Smart Tips for Choosing a Repair Company

Regardless of the industry, there are always companies and so-called professionals who are totally fine with taking customers for a ride. And when it comes to an industry thats highly technical and specialized, the threat becomes even more prevalent.

In order to help you discern between manipulative companies and trusted professionals, were happy to provide you with a list of smart tips for choosing the right garage door repair company.

1. Get Multiple Bids

Any time youre having work done on your home, its smart to get multiple bids. This will give you an idea of what the going rate is in the industry and whether or not youre getting a good deal.

Be sure you are comparing apples to apples. Do the companies offer 24-hour service? What warranty is offered? How long have they been in business? Do they use sub-contractors or are the technicians employed by the company? Will the technicians arrive in company uniforms with well-marked vehicles? All of these questions and more are important when considering different offers. More often than not, the cheapest option is not the best option.

2. Check Critical Information

When considering a garage door repair company, always do your due diligence. This means seeking out and verifying critical information. At the very least, review the following:

Physical address. Any reputable garage door repair company will have a physical address listed online. Always verify this address using Google Maps and Google Street View. Bogus companies will often list phony addresses to avoid being tracked down.

Website. In 2016, almost every reliable company will have a website. Dont fault a garage door repair company for having a poor website, but you should be skeptical if theres no site at all.

Google search. Finally, conduct a simple Google search of the companys name. This will bring up positive or negative information that you may not have uncovered on their website.

All of this information combined should give you a good idea of whether the company is genuine and how theyre viewed in the industry. Some companies have a stronger web presence than others, but its not smart to do business with one that has no paper trail.

3. Ask Friends for Recommendations

The best way to find a trustworthy garage door repair company is by asking friends, family, co-workers, and neighbors. Chances are fairly high that you know someone whos had work done in the past. A positive referral or warning can help you in your search for a reputable company.

The great thing about asking people you know is that they have no skin in the game. Theyre going to be upfront and honest with you for two reasons. First off, they dont want to damage their relationship with you by pointing you in the direction of a sleazy company. Secondly, they dont get a kickback for sending you to the company. Therefore, they have no reason to provide erroneous information.

4. Study BBB Ratings

There are many different ratings and certifications a company can receive, but the gold standard in the industry is a rating from the Better Business Bureau. Before considering a company, go to the BBB website and search their name. Ratings scale from F to A+ and you can sift through reviews and complaints.

If a company isnt accredited or has a poor rating, then youll want to think twice about working with them. However, if a company has been accredited for a long period of time and has a strong rating, then you can be sure theyre reliable and well respected in the industry.

5. Look Out for Red Flags

In order to avoid working with untrustworthy companies, youll need to be aware of some of the red flags especially the following:

Excessive advertising. Its obviously important for a garage door repair company to advertise, but excessive advertising may be a cause for concern. When massive amounts of advertising are in play, it means the company has to recoup its expenses by charging high prices.

Multiple company names. If a company uses different names on advertisements, websites, and customer service phone lines, its a good indication that theyre evading someone or something. You want to see consistency in this area.

Weird feeling. If you get a weird or uneasy feeling when meeting with a repairman, then trust your intuition. An honest garage door repair company will make you feel at ease.
